My PPIS 55th Anniversary Reflections

Tomorrow, our Association, the Persatuan Pemudi Islam Singapura (PPIS) or what we now call the Singapore Muslim Women Association will mark its 55th Anniversary with a Fund Raising Gala Dinner at the Swissotel Raffles City Hotel.

It is going to be very big! 100 tables. VVIPs and VIPs, donors, well-wishers and beneficiaries will be there to celebrate this event which has so far $350,000 for the Association to finance its services.

Looking at what we've achieved thus far, it is really amazing to note that PPIS started out merely as a coming together of 22 like-minded Muslim Women who wanted to champion the rights of their fellow Muslim women and children in Singapore.

Now, the Association is staffed by 100 dedicated employees running various service centres islandwide. We have kindergartens, childcare and student centres. We run the PPIS As-Salaam Family Support Centre to help single parents rebuild families challenged by divorce or death of a spouse. We run the PPIS Jurong Family Service Centre to help develop resilient families. We have the INSPIRASI PPIS to help young couples make informed decisions about marriage and to help those who decided to marry to make it a lifetime commitment. We now have the PPIS AnNissa Centre for Women to empower and enrich the lives of midlifers as they journey into their twilight years.

Despite these expanded services and responsibilities, I am glad to see that PPIS has remained true to its cause of championing the rights of Muslim women and their children.

Here's to 55 years of Lighting Lives and to a further 55 years and beyond!

2008 Updates ( it's about time!)

Hi everyone! Phew, it's been some time since we last updated this blog. That tells you how busy we've been since the start of the new year. I hope to keep you up to date in then next few days.

To start, PPIS Jurong is finally getting the renovations of our soon-to-be new home in Bukit Batok St 31 going. We hope to get the new centre fully functioning by beginning of 2009! I'll make sure you can see our stage by stage developments up in this blog.

Our signature programme, BICARA Hawa will start at Darul Aman Mosque this Saturday, 23 February. Ladies who are interested to join this 15-workshops programme can still register up to the very day. Call Yuliza, our Senior Programme Coordinator ( tel: 65613462 )for details. Phase 2 for the An-Nur Mosque participants started early this January and will end by early march.

RAP, for youths in Yuhua Secondary School will end its first phase soon. The RAPstars will be going through the Service Learning Phase in March. At the same time, RAP will travel east to Madrasah Wak Tanjong. The School has requested for RAP to reach out to ALL its lower secondary school students! Congratulations Social Worker Zakiah for making this happen!

We have exciting news for Titian Harapan participants. This year, we will be piloting our revamped programme after reviewing the feedback we recieved from previous participants. Keep a look out for our TH dates for 2008/09.

Our HOME participants will also be happy to know that for 2008/09, we will embark on Capital Assistance Scheme where we will help to purchase equipments like ovens, cake mixers, sewing machines and hedging machines and provide an heavily subsidized-easy to pay scheme for the HOME participants who qualified for the scheme.

Our Student Care in Jurong has reached full capacity (60 kids) very early this year. Children can now look forward to a streamlined programme both in Bedok Student Care and Jurong Student Care. We've introduced Music & Movement for the students at no extra cost to them. Children will learn the fundamentals of dance and learn coordination and rythm at the same time.

This year PPIS Jurong FSC is overseeing another of PPIS' centre. The PPIS An-Nisaa Centre ( the word 'an-nisaa' is Arabic for 'women' ) located at our Headquarter's premise in Blk 1. Eunos Crescent specifically provides programmes and services for Women beyond the age of 45. We recognised that The Midlifers have their own unique issues and concerns that must be addressed as they journey into this stage of life and beyond. PPIS An-Nisaa looks into their emotional, health and spiritual needs with view of empowering them with skills and knowledge.

Wow! It's been a long time since we've updated our blog! I hope you are still eagerly awaiting the latest news from our FSC!

For a start, our Youthworker, Aida is back from her 10-day US educational trip. She and other Youthworkers from the NUR Centres and Yayasan Mendaki went to visit various Youth Organizations in Boston and Houston, Texas. We caught up with Aida for a chat:

So, Aida, how was your trip?
Great!! I am sure the team learnt a lot from the experience! As for me, I feel that the most significant part of my trip was the visit to the Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) of Greater Houston. Actually BBBS was not part of our itinerary when we received the information package the first day we arrived.
However, our group begged for it to be included as we all felt that we would benefit a lot from the visit since most of the organizations have a mentoring component within our programmes. They managed to squeeze in a meeting with BBBS and we were over the moon. It felt so surreal to actually be there in the organization which I did quite a number of readings on.
I left the meeting feeling rejuvenated and motivated to emulate their success in my programme here. The most significant thing that I learnt from them is their finding : that if a mentoring period is less than six months, it would actually do more damage than good to the youth involved as well as the relationship.

Wow! That's interesting ( and scary to know!) What else have you learnt from this visit?
I think I had information overload for a while, imagine going to 18 organisations within 6 working days!
I felt that I have learnt so much; but at the same time it reinforces the fact that our organization has been doing good work with our programmes and services rendered. From our regular nightly sharing sessions, we discussed about the organization that we visited during the day as well as what we can take back to our organization.
One striking learning point is that while visiting Boston Centre for Youth and Families, one of our Speakers, Dr Courtney Grey, highlighted a progression towards girls being more violent or involved with gangs or violent-related crimes. He also highlighted that Singapore currently is at a stage which they were in a few years ago and that a few years time, Singapore might also be heading towards the same progression as they did.

What do you think we can apply here, in Singapore?
At Youth Advocates in Houston, I learnt that it is important to provide structure to youths but it is also as important to allow them to be themselves. One suggestion is for structure of RAP to be less formal (less lecture) and more hands-on or activity based. At the same time, I hope to provide a more effective support system for mentors as well as their charges to allow them to benefit most from the programme.

How has the experience allowed you to see your role as a Youthworker in Singapore differently?
My experience has taught me that being a youth worker does not mean that my work stops with the youth. The organizations we visited in the States seemed to have a strong spirit of activism and in terms of advocating for the rights of their clients. As such, the work does not only stop at the client, but it goes way beyond. In providing the care and support that client needs, I should advocate more vehemently for their rights. I also see myself as an activist working towards creating a more conducive environment and the world for our future generations of youths.

Any other thoughts on the trip?
Overall, the trip has been an enlightening journey for me. In addition to learning about organizations in the States, I also learnt about best practices of the other Malay Muslim organization that went on the trip together. We also shared on how we can work together to bring about the changes that we seek to see within the Malay community.

The FSC family wishes our Youth Worker Nuraida Khalid a safe trip to the USA. Aida and other Youthworkers under the NUR Centres, a Community Leaders Forum initiative, will be visiting various youth and family organizations in the USA to learn more about their programmes and an overview of the US Social Services.

This is a golden opportunity for Aida to pick up pointers and perhaps best practices which she could share with the FSC team. The programme is sponsored by the US Embassy and is coordinated by Yayasan MENDAKI.

"I look forward to going to Boston where we will be visiting the Massachusetts Alliance for Teen Pregnancy; the Muslim organizations there and many other Programmes. I want to learn as much as I can and see where we can apply the concepts and practices here," beamed Aida.

Bon Voyage, Kamariah!

Today, our Senior Welfare Officer Kamariah will be heading to Japan to board the Nippon Maru as part of the Ship for South East Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP).

The 34th SSEAYP 2007 is scheduled from 22 October to 12 December 2007. During this period, the ship will visit six of the ten ASEAN countries namely Singapore, Indonesia (Jakarta), Malaysia (Port Klang), Thailand (Bangkok), Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City), Lao P.D.R. (Vientiane) and Japan. Singapore will be sending a contingent of 28 youths and a National Leader to participate in this year’s programme.

In Singapore, SSEAYP is co-ordinated by the National Youth Council (NYC) - the national co-ordinating body for youth and youth sector development in Singapore, together with the SSEAYP International Singapore (SIS), the Alumni body of ex-SSEAYP Singapore participants.
The Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) is an annual programme sponsored by the Japanese Government and supported by the member-countries of ASEAN.

The programme brings together about 300 youths from ASEAN countries and Japan, providing them with the unique opportunity to interact on board the ship Nippon Maru for 52 days.
This year the participating youths will spend 8 days more than last year onboard the ship to provide more time for on-board discussions and group activities.

SSEAYP started in January 1974 based on Joint Statements issued between Japan and the five ASEAN countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined in 1985. Vietnam participated in the programme in 1996 while Laos and Myanmar participated in 1998. Cambodia joined the programme in 2000.
The aim of SSEAYP is to foster friendship and greater understanding among youths from Japan and ASEAN. It also seeks to broaden their international outlook.

A series of activities are lined up for the selected participants. The programme during voyages includes discussions on social and youth matters, cultural introductions, sports, recreation and club activities. Activities at each port-of-call include interaction with the local youths, courtesy calls on dignitaries and institutional visits, as well as community service and homestay experience.

NUS Students Visit(Batch 2)

We're back,this time with updates from our second batch of NUS students! We're happy and proud to play host to the students. Let's check out what they students did today! :)

Here's what some of the students had to say:

<---Jaslene: I thought today's session was enriching. I stay very near INSPRASI-PPIS and today' session allowed me to know more about what the centre does. It is encouraging to see the agency's efforts to serve the community.

--->Audrey:The session was very enlightening. At first, I didn't know how an FSC function but I know much better now.Many programs are conducted and they target a wide audience. I especially liked the sharing session by the social workers and got to know their roles better.

Daniel:I found the session useful as I was able to see in real life what an FSC is all about. Going out of the classroom enables me to 'see' what has been taught and discussed during lectures.I liked the presentation best and as I gained a lot of new information.

---> Iza(our budding social worker in purple): The visit changed my pespective of what social work is all about. I wanted to major in social work as I think being a social worker is noble. However, I think it takes more than being noble to be a social worker.

I learnt that social workers are not only involved in one-on-one counseling. They also design and implement programs in response to community needs.

I used to think that programs in FSCs are more remedial but I learnt that they have a number of preventive and developmental programs too.

We hope the students had an enjoyable time at our centre. We thank you for your enthusiam. It was great hosting all of you.

NUS Students Visit (Batch 1)

PPIS Jurong Family Service Centre is proud to host our first batch of NUS students for their agency visit. During the agency visit, students got a chance to learn more about our agency- the structure of the agency as well as the programs offered. Students attended a presentation by our Senior Social Worker, Ms Fajariah Saban as well as Social Worker Rohaya. They were then brought on a short tour of the agency. Our Executive Director, Mr Mohd Ali Mahmood also came in to address the students.

Just look at their faces. Social workers in the making? We certainly hope so.

Let's hear from some of them:

Serene: I find the talk enriching. I discovered a lot of things about the function of an FSC. I learnt that one function of the FSC is to direct clients to the right agencies to ensure that they get the services they need.

Ivan: I didn't know what to expect from this visit but during the session, I learnt that an FSC provide services to people living in their locality. The part I enjoyed the most was when the social workers shared their personal experiences. Its more real. From this visit, I can also see how the many- pronged approach work.

Jaclyn: I found the session very informative. I didn't expect an agency to have so many programs! Some of the programs are also held on a large scale. I used to think that a program will involve the whole family but there are also programs that are specially for youths, children and parents. The part I like the most was the tour around the agency as I was able to get a feel of the FSC.

Fairus:This visit has been interesting. I used to think that an FSC was the one stop centre for all problems and that most of the work was remedial. However, there are many developmental and preventive programs run by the centre. The FSC organises many events and I am amazed at how a small team manages that. And to be a social worker, one needs passion.

Well said indeed! We thank the students for their participation, questions and enthusiasm.

So, while teachers were enjoying their special day..what were we up to??

Did we host a Hats Jumble Sale??

Were we posing for the Hats Extravaganza Fashion Magazine?

Well, we could have done all those, but No! All geared with hats, gusto, brains and brawns, the Student Care team, headed down to Le Meridien Hotel for the inaugural Student Care Centre (SCC) Retreat cum Workplan 2008 Exercise. Staff from SCC Jurong and Bedok, together with the Executive Director, Mr Mohd Ali, Inspirasi Centre Manager Mdm Raihan Ismail and Social Workers Miss Fajariah and Miss Nuraisyah gathered to share their thoughts on the SCC's new mission and vision, as well as the 3-year curriculum plan for our SCCs.

It was interesting to see the staff from the SCCs doing what the SCC children usually do. The SCC Staff, or affectionately known as Cikz to the SCC students, really tapped on their creative juices and roughed it out! They worked as a team, spoke and shared their thoughts, they got on their knees; they wrote and drew and of course, most importantly, they had a whole day of fun, screams and laughter! The results:

The day ended with a sharing of the individuals' hopes and aspirations for themselves and for PPIS Student Care. In conjunction with Teachers' Day, we also took the opportunity to show our appreciation to the efforts and contributions of the SCC Cikz. To the SCC Jurong team: Supervisor Mohammad, Senior Social Work Assistant Jalaluddin, Senior Programme Assistant Kalthom and Programme Assistants Aminah and Mazlina; and the SCC Bedok team: Supervisor Zaleha and Programme Assistants, Noriza, Ruhaiah and Wahidah....

Ramadhan - a time for reflection

Ramadhan is just around the corner! For Muslims, this is a month for reflection as we go through our compulsory fasting. Every day of Ramadhan; set to begin on 13 September 2007 for this year; every Muslim household is set to refrain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset.
What is not commonly known to many non-muslims however, is that fasting also requires us to be mindful of our acts and words. What we see, hear, say, do or even think and wish in our hearts are part of the daily reflections that we need to undergo.
Only through reflection will we be truly appreciative of what we have; what others longed for.
In the spirit of sharing and gratitude, we are encouraged to help others, do good deeds and be the good for humanity.
For our FSC Ramadhan is a time when we take stock of what we have done, to evaluate and improve our programmes to ensure effective outreach and intervention.
We have started with a retreat on 1 September 2007 for the staff of our student care centres. Senior Social Worker Fajariah who conducted the session will give you a report this week.

Our Amazing Race

What do you get when you put 69 children and 17 adults together for an afternoon of Amazing race?

On the 8th of August 2007, staff and students from the PPIS centres( PPIS Jurong Family Service Centre, Bedok Student Care Centre, Jurong Student Care Centre and INSPIRASI PPIS) came together for our very own version of the Amazing Race.

It was indeed a sight to behold as the various groups ran and made way to the various pit stops to complete the challenges. Climbing, swinging, aiming, running, cheering , they did it all. After completing tasks at the five stations, groups made their way to the final pit stop. The enthusiasm of the participants could be seen as they were running from one station to another, checking to make sure they had correctly guessed the clues given. After completing tasks at the five stations, groups had to perform their cheers for the rest.

"I was amazed at the cheers these groups came up with, " Nuraisyah, our newest Social Worker remarked. "They blew me away with thei hand gestures and actions!"

The staff then had a round of captain’s ball. At some points, it clearly looked like it was rugby. Everyone had fun and it was a great opportunity to get moving in the outdoors.

All it in all, it was an enjoyable day. At about 5.30pm, we bade farewell to each other, tired but happy.

Lifelong Learning - Our FSC Culture

Two of our Staff has successfully completed their Masters in Social Work (National University of Singapore). The Convocation Ceremony was held on 8 July 2007 at the NUS Cultural Centre.

Congratulations to Ms Raihan Ismail and Mr. Amran Jamil! We are proud of you!

How does it feel to complete this two years' hard work? Centre Manager Raihan Ismail reflected; "I dedicate this achievement to my husband, Zaidi Yacob, and my boss, Bro. Mohd Ali Mahmood. It was not easy juggling a full time career, studies and a family.
My husband sacrificed his career and took on part-time work for two years to focus on the development of our two young sons. This was to enable me to focus on my studies. I am truly grateful.

Bro. Mohd Ali made all effort possible to facilitate this achievement. Thank you, Bro. for your support and input. "

This infamous star visited our humble abode last week for a meeting on marriage trends among the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore, to gather material for one of his upcoming shows on television.

Look who's attached! NUS Social Work Students

2 Social Work students from NUS just joined the FSC 3 weeks ago to fulfill their fieldwork hours as part of the Social Work Degree programme. Siti Munawwarah Binte Ma'aruf just completed her 3rd year in NUS and contemplating about pursuing the honours degree in Social Work. Saleha Rashidi is in 2nd year going on her 3rd year of varsity education. Both are Social Work majors and aspiring Social Workers.

Let's hear from them about their Social Work dreams and find out how their fieldwork experience has been so far!

Social Worker Rohaya: So! How are you guys doing so far?

Siti Munawwarah: OK... Just that, I got my exam results last week and I've been overwhelmed by the whole process of having to decide between pursuing honours and stepping into career. I didn't know it's going to be this tough! *Arrgghh*

Saleha: I'm fine... *smiles*

SWR: I believe you get to choose the agency for your fieldwork attachment. Why did you choose PPIS-Jurong FSC?

Siti: There are several factors leading to my choice. Firstly, I would like to work with the Malay clientele. Secondly, my dad works with PPIS-Jurong FSC, so he had recommended me to try working here. My choice of the Family Service setting is based on my interest to do direct practice, or ground work as we call it.
And hmm... when I was in Primary 6, I had also participated in a camp organized by PPIS-YWMA under Kak Nymas (who is currently with INSPIRASI) ... so I have kind of acquainted myself with PPIS since my younger days *grins*

Saleha: It's near to my house! *laughs* But of course... there are other FSCs nearby. My choice of agency is based on my interest to venture into an MMO (Malay Muslim Organisations), to explore and see how I fit in. I am also interested in networking, and I know that being in this line would allow me to meet a lot people from within the social service network. I could take this opportunity to develop my networks.

SWR: Why Social Work?
Siti: It's more practical compared to Sociology or Psychology. While the other 2 are theory-based, Social Work is action-oriented. It doesn't only describe and explain phenomena, it acts upon it and creates change. I just made up my mind in year 3. All along I knew I wanted to do something to help the community, but I was not sure exactly how and who to help. I was very much inspired by my lecturers in NUS.
Saleha: Like I said, it's my calling. I just go with the flow and waited for what would come. I have been interested to work with youth and children, perhaps at the policy level. But for now, I would want to be grounded in direct practice, then probably I would journey on to indirect practice later on in my career.

SWR: What do you hope out of your attachment at our FSC?
Siti: I want to find out if I would actually like doing Social Work.

SWR: Sort of testing waters?

Siti: Yes... I was hoping to work with youth when I chose PPIS-Jurong, and so far I have the opportunity to observe R.A.P. (Positive Youth, a developmental youth programme) without directly working with them. So I have not the chance yet to discover my suitability of working with this group.
Saleha: For me, I would like to hone my skills towards becoming a Social Worker. I am not sure if I would be working in an MMO in future, so I am here now to find my fit in an MMO. I also hope to develop my networks during my attachment period.

SWR: If you were not a Social Worker, what would you be?
Siti: I think I would probably be a school teacher, teaching maths..
Saleha: I feel like it's my calling... I don't know what I would be if not a Social Worker.

"hmm...when's the next calling..."

SWR: Which figures have inspired you to be a Social Worker/ join the Social Work profession?
Siti: Definitely my lecturers, particularly Dr Sudha Nair and Dr Timothy Sim, who is a young Social Worker based in Hong Kong, but now he's back home and lecturing at NUS. He totally changed my perception of Social Work education when he once said that we should regard the course as part of the job training to prepare ourselves for the profession.
Saleha: Me too! Dr Sudha Nair is my inspiration... With her broad experience in the profession, she just has so much stories to share... which I simply enjoy listening...

SWR: How about in life? Who have been your role models?
Siti: I never thought about it, I guess no particular person. But I can say that I'm very influenced by my parents.
Saleha: My mum, who went through a lot of hardships but had never let anything pull her down... and also the Prophet (pbuh), who I see as the epitome of a perfect human being.

SWR: Ok... So having said all that, what are your hopes for future generations of Social Workers?
Siti: For us to be recognised the way Social Workers are recognised in Western countries. I understand that in Singapore, Social Work is not as established as other countries, but we are evolving, and developing, and it is important that people recognise the kind of work we do and not mistake us for volunteers...
Saleha: I agree, Social Workers need to be highly-valued. Even if that means higher pay... I feel we deserve it. As our lecturer had advised us to do, to advocate for our own pay rise...

SWR: Finally, any shoutouts to anyone who may be reading this?
Siti: Social Work Rawks! Don't trivialise Social Work ok...
Saleha: To all my fans, friends... just kidding! Seriously, do the best in what you believe in. If you have the passion for people and for giving, then don't be afraid to give your all to it.

We wave a fond farewell to our INSPIRASI PPIS staff who have moved to their new office in Blk 322 Bukit Batok St 33 on 18 May 2007. The spanking new converted HDB void deck is now home to Centre Manager Raihan Ismail and her dedicated team of 4 that will look into our programme for young couples.

" I want the team to know that although we are apart, INSPIRASI PPIS is still part of the FSC family. Ultimately, our goal is the same ; to inspire families to be valued members of the society" - Bro. Mohd.

We welcome our new Senior Social Worker, Mr Amran Jamil to the FSC family. Mr. Amran brings with him experience from PAVe (Promoting Alternatives to Violence) and The Probations Service Branch of the Ministry of Community Development Youths and Sports.

Welcome as well to Ms Nymas Asmahwiyah K M Akil and Ms Mazlina Md Hashim who joined us from PPIS HQ. We hope you will enjoy your new posts. The FSC also welcomes Ms Azma Abu Basri Abu Basari who joined us on 2 April 2007. Both Amran and Azma will be working at our new Dedicated Centre for Marriage Preparation and Enrichment for Young Couples - INSPIRASI PPIS.

Congratulations to Ms Raihan Ismail for her promotion to Centre Manager with effect from 1 April 2007. Raihan will oversee the running of INSPIRASI PPIS. Raihan, who is in her last semester for the NUS Masters Programme, has 10 years experience with the FSC and is ready to face new challenges in her career in social work.
Congratulations as well to Mr. Roslan Mohd Daud for his promotion to Welfare Officer. Roslan too will be with the INSPIRASI team, looking into the smooth running of its Marriage Guidance Programme - Titian Kasih.

The FSC would also like to congratulate our Senior Clerical Officer, Ms Noraini Mohd Yatim for the birth of her second son, Muhammad Da'anial

Another Year of Quality Programmes

Already, we are in the middle of January of another new year. This is the busiest time for the FSC as we consolidate our reports of the activities held in 2006. It has been a very good year for us with all our work targets attained; some beyond our expectations. For the next few weeks, we will upload our Outcome Measures and Milestones at our different programme websites for you to peruse.

A very BIG Thank You to everyone who has made HOME@St52 a success! A special thank you to the Volunteers ( there're too many of you to mention individually!!); for all the hard work right up to the cleaning-up. To Ms. Hariani for the help in designing the posters, banners, tickets and labels. A big thank you to all our sponsors and donors for the goodie items, prizes and sponsoring of tickets for our beneficiaries.

Thank you to our GOH, Ms Grace Fu, Minister of State for National Development, for gracing the event and to all our Guests as well.

Thank you to all our performers, especially the PPIS Bukit Batok Kindertaten children; the PPIS Student Care Centre, IYAD Student Care Centre, Intensify from Hougang Sheng Hong FSC, People's Association, The NUS Guitar Club, the HIP-HOP dancers, to Sharin, Haziq, Murshidah and Fauzi. FSC supports AWARE's White Ribbon Campaign

The Young Women Muslim Association (PPIS) and PPIS Jurong FSC joins AWARE (Association of Women for Action & Research) in their campaign against violence on women.

The White Ribbon Campaign was started in 1991 by a group of men in Canada to end men's violence against women. It took them only 6 weeks to reach out to 100 000 men!

Today, 47 countries ran such campaigns annually. The campaign spans a period of 2 weeks and its main event day, November 25, coincides with the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Woman'.

We supported the cause by helping to make 5000 white ribbons which were distributed to the Malay-Muslim community at designated mosques during the Friday Prayers on 24 November 2006 following a special Friday sermon that underlines Men's roles as protector of Women and Children.

FSC joins Community Leaders' Forum

PPIS Jurong FSC is one of the 7 new players that will be involved in the 2007 Community Leaders Forum (CLF) efforts in addressing the problems of the Malay-Muslim Community. Dr Yacob Ibrahim, Minister for Environment & Water Resources and the Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs made the announcement in his 2006 Report for the Community Leaders' Forum, held in Singapore Sheraton Towers on Saturday, 11 November 2006.

The FSC will assimilate the CLF Youth-in-Action Plus (YIA+) programme into its existing RAP Programme. Visit our RAP site for more details

Projek BISKUT: Hari Raya Cookies for HOME!

Baking 140 bottles of cookies in one day?! This was the challenge the FSC staff had to overcome one Saturday afternoon.

To bring smiles to needy families during the month of Ramadhan, staff of PPIS-Jurong Family Service Centre embarked on a mini baking project called Projek BISKUT.

We garnered generous contribution of baking ingredients and donation from staff, family members and friends, FSC staff baked and distributed a bottle of chocolate chip cookies and a bottle of honey cornflake cookies to more than 70 HOME families.

Suprisingly, we also recieved a generous donation of cordials from Phoon Huat Pte Ltd ( a leading baking supply company ); dates from Ba'Alwi Mosque; and crisps & crackers from donors through our Main Headquarters, PPIS.

Seeing the beneficiaries pleasantly suprised gave the FSC staff a sense of fulfillment at the end of the day. We distributed the festive goodies were during the October HOME activities.
